We received a call from Sheriff Kuntz regarding law enforcement and hand-held cell phone use. According to the Sheriff, during the regular business of the day law enforcement must follow the same law about hand-held devices, (cell phones, etc) as regular citizens.
However, during an emergency call from dispatch, or during any emergency, an officer is allowed to use their hand-held cell phone. Therefore, both the initial letter-writer and the person who made the comment are correct.
Sheriff Kuntz stated that he "discourages using the hand-held cell-phones by his deputies if at all possible, for safety reasons."
