It is my understanding that many local folks here in Calaveras County are not aware of the laws regarding animal ownership. So I thought as a responsible pet owner I would share some of these issues so that people would be aware and be more caring of their pets and their neighbors.
- It is illegal in California to walk your dog off your property without a leash.
- Owner is responsible for any injuries or damage that a dog does, whether or not the owner was negligent.
- Illegal to let dog roam (go off your property)or allow to trespass or be upon any private property of another person.
- It is illegal to tether, fasten, chain, tie, or restrain a dog to any dog house, tree, fence, or other stationary object. A person may temporarily tether a dog “no longer than is necessary for the person to complete a temporary task”.
- Its illegal to let your dog bark day or night. No person shall keep, maintain or permit either willfully or through failure to exercise proper control any animal(s), including livestock, which disturbs the peace and comfort of the inhabitants of the neighborhood, or interferes with the reasonable and comfortable enjoyment of life or property. Conditions constituting a nuisance include: 1.Excessive dust; 2.Excessive noise; 3.Vectors; 4.Threat to health.
- Punishment -Owners are subject to an infraction and/or a misdemeanor charge. Infraction leads to a fine of up to $250, while a misdemeanor can result in 6 months or less in county jail, a fine of up to $1,000 or both.
- Your dog must be vaccinated and licensed with the county if over 4 months old
- The first step to share your concerns with your neighbor.
- If the owner is unwilling to comply then document the situation. Either photographs of the dog roaming (at large) or audio/video recording of dog barking. Document time and date.
- Contact Animal Services and email or deliver in person your evidence so that they authorities will cite the owner with an infraction. (Phone calls will not work).
- Follow up with Animal Services to verify the evidence is received and citation served.
- If the problem continues start a petition in your neighborhood and have your neighbors sign it.
- Contact the Calaveras County District Attorney with your petition and other evidence.
- Contact the Supervisor for your district and make them aware that your rights are being violated and you need their assistance.

I also live in Copper Cove. I have a neighbor that has two large dogs. These dogs are nothing but a problem for me and my family. The neighbor’s dog run is right up against my property line, the same side of the house that my bedroom window is on. During hot summer days, I can’t open my window because of the smell. And if we turn our light on in our bedroom or make any type of noise, the dogs will then bark for hours. I don’t which is worse, the dogs barking or the neighbor yelling out his window to get them to shut up. Thanks for printing this article.
I to live in Copperopolis over here on Arrowhead my neighbors dogs do get out, they tear up my yard, and somehow they always seem to be able to use my lawn as a toilet. I have yet to of figured this one out, but every time I mow my lawn, I always have to check for dog droppings or I get it all over me when I hit it with the lawn mower. And you should see the nice yellow spots I have on my lawn on that side of the house.
I live on Bay View and have the same problem go figure huh? I live in the middle of three houses that surround me and they all have big dogs. One in the back has two lil ankle bitters and a big dog. One of her lil dogs got loose and came into my yard and used my yard as its own personal potty. And then lifted its leg on my brand new car's tires. I took pics of the dog in my yard and sent them to animal controll. The lady got cited and then had to show up in court for her dog. I was in court as well. Well to make a long story short she didnt leave a happy camper that day and was mad cause she had to pay for her dog being out and about witout anyone around. The only person she has to be mad at and blame is herself. I have 3 dogs. Two lil ones and a med size one. As a responible pet onwer Iam out with them when they are outside I dont care what time it is or what the weather is like. I make sure my dogs do not go over in the neighbors yard to either bother or use the yard to potty... ITS NOT THAT HARD PPL!!! it just takes u getting off ur booty lol. My dogs are inside dogs so when they do bark its only if someone comes to the door.
Its a walk if u dare in our neighborhood. U cant go out and enjoy a nice realaxing walk cause of loose dogs. I was sitting on my front porch one day and there was this lady walking her dog ON A LEASH!!! and her lil doggy poop bags minding her own business and out of nowhere she was attacked by a large dog.. she was yelling for help and me and my husband came running with crow bars and whatever we could find to help this poor woman. Lucky for the dog it ran away before we got there. What is it going to take before something can be done??? a child being attacked? hurt or even killed? and if u live in copper cove subdivisoin there is alot of kids running around and playing. If u cant take care of a dog and look after it then dont have one... own a hamster or a snake or something. Our pets are apart of our familys they are not an accessory or something u can play with then get bored and then kick the poor thing out of the house and into the yard in 100 degree weather. They have hearts... they have feelings... treat them like u would want to be treated. and for u and the safty for everyone else around use your leash... they make them for a reason not just something to look at. I am sorry if i hurt anyones feelings about what i said. But lets all get to gether and work together!!!!
Thank you,
