She was born August 22 1917 in Camden, New Jersey to Mike and Maria Cilenti. She lived for a very short time in Ripon and then moved to the family ranch in Calaveras County as a very young girl. He family was involved in the logging/lumbering industry and she went to Banner School.
Carmenne spent her entire life in Calaveras County until moving to Modesto in January 2011.
She married her husband, George, in 1940, and they celebrated 43 years together. They led a wonderful and very active life, moving to their own ranch in the Mountain Ranch area in 1944, where they raised their two sons.
Carmenne had a "pioneer" spirit, as there was no power or telephone at the ranch for several years. She and George moved to San Andreas in July 1961, when they found that making trips to town (sometimes 3 a day) was too time consuming.
Carmenne did not work outside of the home; however, she was a very active community volunteer. Over the years, she participated in the Grange, Farm Bureau, and was a Charter Member of the Calaveras/Tuolumne Cattlewomen.
She served as Worthy Matron Azalea Angels Chapter No 77 Order of the Easter Star and the Job's Daughters. She was a Charter Member of the Calaveras County Historical Society, and an original member of the Mark Twain St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary, where she volunteered in some capacity from the hospital's opening in 1952 until moving to Modesto in 2011.
She will be remembered for her famous homemade pastas and Italian bread as well as her many projects including lap robes, potluck holders, and scrubbers that she made for the hospital auxiliary.
She made "Dam It Dolls" and continued making these until April of 2012 with the last batch of 20 dolls going to the American Cancer Society for a fundraiser. It is known that some of these dolls have made it as far east as South Dakota and Louisiana and the last one was purchased by her niece Linda, from the gift shop at Casa de Modesto where she was living at the time of her death.
She never met a stranger and always found some good in everyone she met. Carmenne was preceded in death by her husband, George, her parents, and her siblings Tony, Dan, Marie, Joe, John, Nick and Louie. She leaves sons John (Juanita) and Jim (Cindy) as well as 8 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchilren and 3 great-great grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at the San Andreas Town Hall on Thursday, June 21, 2012 at 1 PM. In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to Mark Twain St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation, 768 Mountain Ranch Rd in San Andreas, CA 95249.
