Housing Crisis in Calaveras

While most of us are aware of the foreclosure crisis in Calaveras County, many may not be aware of the impacts of having no place to live.

In the past couple of days there have been reports of both someone living
in an empty foreclosed house, and of a tent being stolen from a vehicle.

It's a sad situation our elected officials have put this County in. Without jobs, residents must resort to whatever necessary to try and survive.

Until we elect Supervisors who understand and care about people needing jobs, this will continue, we fear.

In Murphys there is an increase of "homeless" sleeping under brush well hidden at night. The Murphys Park area is home to these poor souls, we see their hidden tents and belongings and wonder why this community that bows to tourists turn a blind eye to these folks. Im sure the homeless population in Calaveras County is larger than reported, and what are the Supervisors doing to address the needs of these people? Do you have any answers for us? Most people look the other way and figure it's not their problem..well..it could be if they lost their jobs and homes! And how many children are homeless in the county?? Any answers out there??

I agree with the previous comment. And if Callaway and Wilensky really care about the homeless as they have stated many times, why don't they use all of the TOT tax to build a homeless shelter. They only care about their supporters getting paid back and their re-elections.
