Dear Editor:
Perhaps this should be a dead bear on our flag |
As for the others,
they were also afraid. Afraid of their constituents and afraid to lose votes. They were afraid of the long term backlash from hunters/voters.
But what they failed to consider, is that 83% of Californians support SB1221. The National Humane Society is not alone in their position. The ASPCA also supports SB1221. The Calaveras Humane Society taking NO position on SB1221 is disgusting.
This matter will go to the state for a vote soon enough. By then the tourists from the rest of the state will be well aware of the Calaveras County BOS position on cruelty to animals. And Perhaps the 83% will decide that Murphy's and Arnold and Tulloch and Big Trees are places they will avoid in the future.
That is a long term implication that BOS did not consider. This fight has not yet begun. If 83% of Californians disagree with hound hunting bears, we better hope that the 1700 bear bunters can compensate for THOSE losses.

Smokey the Bear was a black bear. Would they kill hime with hounds now, too?
How can anyone want to torture the symbol the National Forest Service uses for fire prevention.
