August 24, 2012 at 6 AM: The Ponderosa Fire in Shasta and Tehama Counties, which was caused by lightning, is now 61% contained.
Evacuations are still in effect, and travel within the perimeter of the fire is banned temporarily.Nearly 28,000 acres have been burned so far.
84 bulldozers, 11 helicopters and 2400 firefighters are currently assigned to this fire.
64 residences and 20 outbuildings have been destroyed.
