The Stanislaus National Forest Supervisor, Susan Skalski is pleased to announce the selection of Dianne Stearns and Joshua Cripps as the 2012 Artist in the Woods maestros.
The program solicited applications earlier this year from artists interested in creating a sense of stewardship for the beauty of the natural and cultural resources of the Stanislaus National Forest, which extends from Calaveras County into Tuolumne County.
The Stanislaus Artist in the Woods program provides professional artists of all media an opportunity to receive creative inspiration from the Sierra landscape, while pursuing their artistic discipline.
The selected artists will stay in a historic cabin on the Sumit Ranger District for two weeks in September and October.
A stipend will be provided to the artists from the Three Forest Interpretive Association for meals, a portion of travel, and a small portion for supplies.
In return, the artists are asked to donate an origianl piece of artwork representative of their stay in the Stanislaus National Forest and conduct a workshop instructing the public in their discipline.
Stearns is a local artist from Sonora. She is a versatile California watercolorist, engraver and calligrapher and is best known for her vibrantly color florals, high design graphics, and inspired animal paintings.
Her program schedule will be announced this fall.
Cripps, a landscape photographer from Santa Cruz, will be the first to embrace the program this year.
He will be working on the Forest from September 11 to September 21. He will conduct a beginning and intermediate natural landcape photography workshop on saturday September 15 and a separate workshop on Sunday, September 15, 2012.
During the workshops students will be photographing dramatic peaks, cascading streams, alpine meadows, and mixed conifer forests.
In addition to visiting invredible landscapes, the workshops focus on helping the student product striking and powerful compositions, as well as tellinr a story with photographs.
There is also a strong emphasis on understanding your camera's settings in order to use them creatively.
Both workshops meet at Summit Ranger Station on Hwy 108 at 12:45 PM. The workshops are limited to 6 students each at a cost of $60 per student.
