The Bureau of Land Management will hold a "burro only" adoption in Grass Valley on Oct. 12 and 13.
The adoption will take place at the Nevada County Horsemen's Facility, 10600 Bubbling Wells Road.
The burros will arrive Friday, Oct. 12,
2012 with an evening competitive bid adoption on Friday from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Animals not taken during bidding will be available for a $125 adoption fee.
Saturday, Oct. 13, will be pick-up day and first-come, first-serve, for any unadopted burros from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.
"We had a great interest in burro adoptions at the Nevada County Fair this year. Because of that interest, we decided to have a small "burro only" adoption," said Amy Dumas, California Wild Horse and Burro Program manager.
There will be approximately 12 burros looking for homes, half jennies and half geldings.
To qualify, adopters must be at least 18 years old and residents of the United States. Adopted animals must be kept in corrals that offer at least 400 square feet per animal, surrounded by four-foot pipe or board fences.
Two-sided roofed shelters are required. Adopters receive title to their animals after providing a year of good care.
Wild horses and burros are protected by a federal law, the Wild and Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act, which requires the BLM to maintain wild populations in balance with other range users, including wildlife and domestic livestock, so that food and water sources are sustained and rangelands are conserved.
