Pinecrest Day Use Area Construction

Sonora, Calif. (November 05, 2012)…Stanislaus National Forest Supervisor, Susan Skalski, today announced that the construction contract for improvements to the restrooms, amphitheater and associated infrastructure of the popular Pinecrest Day Use Area was awarded to Element Engineering of Newcastle, California.

"We are especially excited that the contractor will re-use and recycle existing materials where possible" said Supervisor Skalski. Asphalt from existing trails will be ground up and used as a base for new trails, when constructed.

Element Engineering announced that fixtures from existing restrooms will be salvaged and donated to Habitat for Humanity or similar organization for re-use.

Additionally, all new restroom facilities will be constructed with low flow fixtures to conserve water now and into the future.

Construction is expected to start as soon as equipment is transported to the site and will continue up to Memorial Day weekend as weather and snow conditions permit.

This week, a staging area will be located in the paved parking lot across from the amphitheater. The staging area will remain in the parking lot through May to facilitate the short construction window.

Site clearing and underground utilities will be completed first, and then construction of the foundations for restrooms will follow.

Sequencing of implementation may change based on the supply and delivery of materials. The restroom at the amphitheater and boat launch area will remain open for the winter season.

The day use construction is expected to occur over the next two to three years. Construction activities are planned to occur September through May each year in order to avoid the busy summer recreation season.

The Forest Service and Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) are working together to upgrade Pinecrest Lake's facilities and infrastructure to enhance recreation, meet American's with Disability Act accessibility requirements and improve traffic and parking conditions.

The modernization of public restrooms and the facilities for disabled visitors will improve barrier-free access to recreation resources, and protect natural resources through minimizing water use and resource consumption.

The Pinecrest Recreation Area is located at Pinecrest Lake, within the Stanislaus National Forest. The area is located 30 miles east of Sonora, California and within a day trip driving distance of the Central Valley and the Bay Area.

The Pinecrest Recreation Area includes recreation facilities at the Pinecrest Day Use Area, Pinecrest National Recreation Trail, Pinecrest Campground, Meadowview Campground, and Pioneer Trail Group Campground.
