The minimum wage rose in 10 states on January 1, 2013, according to the National Employment Law Project.
The Federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour, much lower than California's $8.00.
In Missouri, it rose 10 cents from $7.25 to $7.35, for example. In New York there is an effort to raise the minimum wage from $7.25 to $8.50 an hour to help stimulate the recovery.
Since the recession began in 2007, more jobs available are in the service and retail sectors, which are traditionally lower income jobs.
