While most living in Calaveras County wish we had an Indian Casino, a lawsuit filed by Nicolas Villa Jr. is challenging
the decision of the Bureau of Indian Affairs to acquire in trust, land in Amador County for a casino.
The lawsuit is being moved to a Sacramento court next. Villa apparently is challenging the Miwoks of not being the "true band" of Miwok Indians of California.
Villa is the leader of what he calls the true Ione Band of Miwok Indians. This does not appear to be a battle for tribal rights, but for "money".
A casino brings in a lot of money to tribes, as well as to the state and local economies.
