China surpassed the US in December

Not too much was said about it, but China officially passed the US in December 2012, to become the world's leading importer of oil -the first time in nearly 40 years that the US didn't own that rather uncomfortable distinction.

That same month, North Dakota, Ohio and Pennsylvania together produced 1.5 illion barrels of oil a day - more than Iran exported. Now that's quite a shift.
