Dear Sierra Sentinel:
I haven't noticed any good critter stories in the Sentinel this year, so I'll give you mine.
About 2:30 AM I woke up hearing water running. Checked the house, but found nothing. Then turned on the porch light and stepped outside.
Yes, the water was running outside. My first thought was, Oh, No! A broken pipe in the middle of the night!
I woke up my husband about 2:45 AM and groggily he got up, got a flashlight and growlingly made his way outside.
Following the noise, he found that a faucet had actually been turned on. Baffled, he turned it off and went back to bed.
At first light, we found out what had apparently happened. I always throw bread crumbs out for the birds, and last night there were still a bunch out by my birdbath.
Well, between all the bread crumbs being gone in the morning and my newly planted pansies being tipped over in their pot, we knew it had to be a bear. He must have brushed the handle on his way past the faucet and accidentally turned it on. Probably terrified him and he knocked over the plants exiting hurriedly, stage left.
We agree with you folks, that the clear-cutting and brushing (you called it slash and burn) going on out in the forest, these animals are forced to look for food around homes.
I have to tell you though, they don't bother us at all. It doesn't matter if you put out seed and water for the birds or raccoons, the bears will help themselves, too. And that's ok with us.
And besides, we are like you. We'd rather have the bears, than crazy and alcoholic neighbors, so we are lucky.
R & M in Arnold
