OP-ED Good News! Calaveras County MAY get new Animal Facility

While the entire Board of Supervisors spoke favorably of the proposal by Animal Services to designate a site to build a new facility on the campus
there in San Andreas, we still heard dissent.

The dissent was not from our Board of Supervisors, but from a woman who is apparently the President of the CHS (Calaveras Humane Society.)

She seemed to make it clear that while the land would be owned by the County of Calaveras, that the Humane Society, who is seeking donations, will OWN the building.

What a sad state of affairs! The county went through a miserable period of time after an old public access film group claimed they owned the building where Public Access TV has a studio, although the land belongs to CCWD.

Are they again going to allow this to happen? If the local humane society truly cares about animals and the facility is built with donations from the County residents, why would any particular organization own it?

It was a nasty tone, we have heard before from the same humane society member when the Board wouldn't give them a piece of land they wanted.

The land and the building MUST be donated and put in the County's name as owner, so that the Calaveras Humane Society cannot use it for their own purposes or block people they don't like, out!!!

That is exactly what happened with the Public Access building, so don't say it can't happen. I know many people who will not donate for the new building if it only belongs to a small group of people.

Do they want to build it and then later try to force the County to buy it from them, therefore filling their personal coffers with case, as in the case of the Public Access studio?

Be careful Supervisors and County Counsel. That woman sounds a bit too nasty for our taste. Everyone wants the animals to have a new facility and for it to be right there in the County land area, central to residents.

What they don't want is a tiny group taking our donations and then claiming they OWN a building on County land.

I'm so happy that we might get a new pound, but what is this about one organization owning it. I once lived in an area where the local animal organizations ran the adoption part, but the county ran the enforcement part. I agree with the new shelter, but stay away from anyone but the county owning a building with donated funds.

This should be about the ANIMALS and the Calaveras County Humane organization needs to seriously look at what they're turning into (self-absorbed). They should be SUPPORTING the County and doing everything in their tax-exempt efforts to help rather than block! Shame on this "president" of the Humane Society!!! Time for a change.

This attitude has pervaded the humane society in calaveras for a long time. I have even heard Supervisor Callaway, in who's district most of the board members live, say that she doesn't know if the CHS can EVER take over animal services. Who's going to donate to them for the animals if only THEY are going to own it. This MUST belong to the County to succeed.
