Calaveras BOS Chair Callaway Left "out in the cold" twice at May 14, 2013 meeting

At the May 14, 2013 Board of Supervisors meeting two things became clear. The main piece
of information  we learned was that the three new Board of Supervisor members, Ponte, Wright and Edson are thinking for themselves.

For one thing, when Bonnie Newman of Double Springs came up during public comment and spoke, as she often does, of the problems at the IHSS (In Home Supportive Services) Advisory Committee, after 4 years, she was finally offered assistance.

Superviosr Wright has been attending the IHSS Advisory meetings, and County Counsel announced new rules and other changes about appointments to that committee. Supervisor Callaway didn't seem to know anything about it, although she has been aware of Newman's complaints for all of these four years.

Then the Board discussed changes to rules of order during their meetings. The three new Board members took the lead, in changing who gets the last word during the appeals process.

Callaway objected throughout the entire discussion, but the three new Board members, led by Wright again, made it a fair process by now allowing the public to speak again after the appellant rebuts.

Again, a change for the better, which the old Board would never allow. The final vote to make the comment process more fair was 4 to 1, with Callaway the only one wanting things to stay the old way.

We congratulate the three new Board members; Ponte, Wright and Edson, for their leadership and lack of fear in challenging the "old Boards unfair ways", and making decisions based on what is good for the county and a more Democratic process.

Supervisor Callaway was clearly not happy at being left "out in the cold" twice in one meeting.

So DELIGHTED these three new Supervisors are independent and NOT ones to fall in line behind Callaway!! She's out in the cold where she belongs...she after all, created the frigid environment!

Things are changing for the better.
Tofanelli left saying the county was solvent. Edson says the county's broke. I believe Edson. If you consider a $16 million pension deficit liability and a $2 million budget deficit this year problematic.
Maybe, transparency is coming to Calaveras County?

"....for their leadership and lack of fear in challenging the "old Boards unfair ways", and making decisions based on what is good for the county and a more Democratic process." We saw Ponte's and Wright's ability to withstand the heat of the kitchen by beginning their terms meeting the Lake Tulloch rental issue headon and facilitating a very fair and reasonable ordinance.

Lake Tulloch issue fair and reasonable ordinance? That's a stretch. All short term rentals should be required to abide by the regulations. Then it's fair and reasonable. Discrimination is not fair.

You call Wright a free thinker? He said "I have to vote for the Short Term Rental Ordinance, it is Debbie's District and she wants it" although he thought the fee was unreasonable and the fact that the non-resident homeowners were not notified!

Again we hear from those who have no clue what it is like to LIVE fulltime next door to unregulated transient renters. Discrimination? Zoning laws are in place for the entire county which prohibit transient renters (even before this needed ordinance). You have an unresolvable issue with a neighbor? Call in a code violation. Unreasonable fee? When the landlord is raking in $40,000.00-$60,000.00 a year illegally? And non-resident homeowners were not notified? This has been at the forefront of LOCAL debate for at least 5 years. And, funny, the landlords of these illegal transient rentals never notified me when they rent out their home to 50 obnoxious and unruly renters week after week for 5 -6 months! Enjoy your last Summer of Greed. We have a new ordinance to follow next year! And it will be enforced to the letter! Are you listening CCLTOA!? Surf’s up!

What is a code violation? If you pay close attention, you'll realize codes are not always enforced in Calaveras County.
You're right, I don't live next door to unregulated transient renters. I live next door to permanent residence homeowners who do not have a clue about codes or regulations.
What are you going to complain about when Copper grows, hotels (short term transient renters) whose guests bring their boats to launch on Lake Tulloch? I believe the best is yet to come. Better buy wigs now, so you'll be prepared after you've pulled all your hair out.

Next weeks BOS item 13: Resolution ESTABLISHING basis of funding for code compliance unit.
I wonder if the same anti short term transient renter advocates will be there to promote the resolution?
Maybe those advocates will offer up (donate on an annual basis) some of their own money to assist in the funding of the compliance unit?
Wait and see.

Well, looks like the County will be investing some of our monies. And for a very good cause at that. Do you really want the sheriff or Fire Chief handling these code issues? Now that is a pricey venture. Having a code compliance unit makes sense. I would assume the unit will also be funded by fees for various permits and fines from scofflaws.
What makes you think I should pony up some extra dough? Is it I happen to believe in my rights? And I stand up for them? Ya’ll got some nerve on that one!
"Donate on a regular basis.." I already DO! Three times a year. I pay my property, state, and federal taxes!
Wait and see...LOL!

Taxpayer, you missed someones previous point. Enforcement is not equal in calaveras county.
Since you live on waterfront property, you can afford to pay more. Isn't that part of the new Omerica?
Pay more, maybe the IRS will send you an autographed photo of Omerica's commander in ????? I forgot what's he in command of?
When I think about it, you must really have some juice with the BOS. To get that ordinance passed so quick. Would you help the rest of us get enforcement of all code violations, not just yours? Thank you so much.

LOL! Oh my! So I live on the waterfront and pull strings at the BOS! Wow! What power I have!! When you find “my” home, please, by all means direct me to it. I would LOVE to live on the waterfront. But, unfortunately, the only home I’m aware of is this one. On a street. Across from homes which are ON the water.

My wife and I worked our rear off to be where we are at. And that is being comfortable within our OWN MEANS! I work a min of 40 hrs a week from my home office. How dare you insinuate we are well off enough to buy votes from a waterfront deck. The ordinance didn’t get passed quickly, it just past by you quickly. Seems you are not the sharpest tool in the County shed. Which is reinforced by bringing in President Obama to the discussion. I guess you need someone to blame for your bad fortunes. God forbid you look in the mirror for that answer.

This ordinance has been in the works for over two years. It has been in public discussion for over five years. It just so happened those for the ordinance were better organized than the opponents. They brought substance, reason, and fair play to the table. The opponents thought it would blow over as this discussion has during the years. The opponents thought a washed up Motel owner could lead the way. Those against brought finger pointing, fabrication, and threats from a HOA. The BOS didn’t outlaw transient rentals, they gave fair play to all. If you are running a public business, it better be safe for the public. Simple, right? Do you want to rent a fire trap for your families’ two week vacation on the waters of Lake Tulloch? Maybe YOU are not the right person to answer that. No. You are not.

Happy Memorial Day to all who have served and bless those who gave the ultimate sacrifice so we can have these discussions without fear of retribution!

Hey buddy, you got a spare dime?
Retribution from who?
Fire traps and all, would you agree then the short term renter ordinance should be county wide?
Ya'll be safe and watch out for those short term renters. Are they there yet?

No dimes.. Geez are there only slackers on this blog??...Get a job, buddy...Sorry to tax your mind with reference to our 1st amendment ... But there is an HOA officer who insinuated trouble could come (personally from them) to those wanting this ordinance..that's retribution against my right to free speech ... And once again may I remind all of those who STILL don't understand and continue their "county wide" bellyache. There are municipal codes ALREADY on the county books which ANYONE in the county can use. Zoning laws, in particular, do not allow transient renters. Call the county for code compliance enforcement. Ya'll understand?
You might also want to speak to Supervisor Callaway. It was her real estate backers which kept this ordinance confined to Tulloch!!
And yes, folks are here and it seems the message has gotten out (so far) to be responsible transient renters and respect the neighborhoods they are in!! And that's all we, as full time residents, can ask for...

you keep expressing municipal codes and code enforcement. Those of us, including you, who pay our taxes to fund government; do you think we get 100% enforcement from code compliance? What percentage of enforcement do you think we should receive? If the zoning code does not allow transient renters, does that mean Ms. Callaway selectively administrates the law for her re-election? Would that be self serving corruption? Oh, welcome to Calaveras County!

Didn't the county just have a jobs study session? By your count, how many new jobs are available in Calaveras County? This so called "slacker", by you, may want to apply for a job with hours of 12 to 1 with an hour for lunch. Not really, just twisting your knickers a little tighter.
One other thing, now that you have your ordinance, you're done until something else directly affects you?

Take the rest of the weekend, pay homage to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for us and those who are serving and those who have returned from serving. God Bless our military men and women. God Bless America.

If you've got the cajones, ask the short term transient renters if they are veterans. Take a poll and report back. Thank you.
