Letter to the Editor...About Pope Francis

   Dear Editor:

As a lifelong, but disheartened and non-practicing Catholic, I feel that a semblance of hope was at hand in Pope Francis' comments about the church's "obsessions".

His comments were that the church had grown "obsessed" with abortion, gay marriage and contraception, and that he had chosen not to talk about those issues despite recriminations from critics.

His lengthy interview included comments I have never before heard from a Pope, with criticisms for the church putting dogma before love and for prioritizing certain moral doctrines over serving the poor and marginalized.

Now I'm trying to decide if anything will really change or if I will ever return. The church's judgment of others, whether of women wanting to control their own reproduction or of ostracizing homosexuals, has taken the forefront over everything else.

And who are they to judge, as they who have for generations allowed Priests to molest young children without any regard.

They protected the priests and have now been forced to pay out millions and millions of members donations because of their lack of regard for those children.

Judge not, lest ye be judged!  Will anything really change. I doubt it!

Fellow Catholic, non-practicing unless I need inspiration (aka: a favor) from God...lol!
I am thankful for Pope Francis. He will get the church poised for the 21st century. He's a Pope for the people. And Catholics are a lot of people!
It is true. All the men and women within the Church should be held accountable for their actions. I believe Pope Francis is aware of this. And he has let his Cardinal's know he won't stand for inappropriate Church behavior. I see a bit more transparency.
As far as birth control, abortion, LGBT, women priests, divorce, etc. I assume he's not wanting his flock to be all too consumed with these points. He acknowledges there are voices to be heard and he does and will listen.
Just don't forget the other aspects of a religion. Praising your God, following the 10 commandments, establishing a sound family life, supporting your church and community, etc.
I personally don't follow these Church guidelines as often as I should, but from time to time they are nice to have if you do get lost out here in life.

Glad I'm not a Catholic. Makes me sick about those priests and how can people donate money to pay for the church's sickness.

Glad I AM Catholic!
You know they keep finding teachers who molest kids and you keep sending your children to school?
Or do you home school or send them to another school?
Same within the church no matter what faith. You have a choice where to worship and to donate.
And child abuse is society's sickness. Fortunately or unfortunately not just limited to the church (see Jerry Sandusky).

good point about Sandusky. it is a sickness in our society that has too long gone untreated and unpunished. I do like Pope Francis. Maybe things will change.

Oh but there is a HUGE difference. School teachers do not stand in judgment of others....Catholic Priests do.
