Bent A Winther of San Andreas

   June 3, 1928 - October 5, 2013

Bent passed away unexpectedly on October 5, 2013 in San Andreas at the age of 85. He was born June 3, 1928 in Copenhagen, Denmark to Asta and Ange Winther and had three siblings; John, Leif and Lis.

When he came to the United States in the 1950's, he met and married Alice, his wife of 58 years. They lived in San Jose for many years where he became a citizen and worked as a finish carpenter.

When he retired, they moved to Mountain Ranch in Calaveras County to a beautiful home Bent built himself; then during the last 10 years, he and his wife resided in San Andreas.

When he lived in Denmark he was married to his first wife, Henny, on October 6, 1949. They lived in Copenhagen near his parents and had a son, John, on November 28, 1949.

At the time Bent worked in a factory, but was recruited as a soldier to serve on the Danish Royal Yacht, Donnebrog, as a skilled seaman to serve the Danish King Frederik IX.

Shortly after, he was asked to be a "livrist", a guard to the royal family.  During his service, he received three medals from the Royal Family.

He was proud of his service to the king and his Danish heritage.  This translated to food as well. Some of Bent's favorite things were enjoying his wife's cooking, especially Danish Smorgasbord, Beer Kase cheese and telling stories about the time he spent as an able-bodied seaman, traveling around the world.

His friends and family will miss hearing his colorful reminiscences.

He was predeceased by his two brothers, Leif and John, his sister, Lis and his stepdaughter, Victoria.

Surviving members of the family include his loving wife Alice (Miller) Winther, his first wife, Henny; son, John and daughter-in-law Mariann of Copenhagen, Denmark; stepson Ronald Lamb and daughter-in-law Aldrene of Morgan Hill.

He leaves behind  two grandchildren in Denmark; Thomas and Gitte, and two great-grandchildren. He is survived by four step-grandchildren in the US.

He will be missed by all of his family, especially his granddaughter, Stacie Stevens, who stayed with him during the last year of his life, and her daughter Hailey, who visited him regularly.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the American Lung Association.
