We asked Brent Harrington, the interim Calaveras County Planning Director if he would like to comment on the Planning Commissions actions at their last meeting.
His response was as follows:
" I assume you are referring to the Planning Commission's unanimous denial of the RV storage facility.
As staff, we were a bit surprised that the PC unanimously denied the project, but that is their prerogative.
They appear to be a thoughtful group, and I don't think they took pleasure in the action. I will end my comments there."
It was fairly clear that the Planning Department staff was prepared to recommend approval of the project, based on the previous Planning Commission meeting where the Commissioners to a one were in favor of the project.
So, what happened with the Planning Commissioners was totally political, as Supervisor Callaway had most certainly made her fears of losing her next election clear to each one. Forest Meadows is her base vote!
Since everything is decided based on politics in Calaveras County, this does not surprise us; a petition with 350 signatures and her phone ringing off the hook. Callaway had to kill the whole project.
What was a bit sick, was that the Commissioners tried to put the blame on their old Planning Director Rebecca Willis, who they had always seemed to worship.
Of course, the real blame goes to Calaveras Supervisor Callaway, whose own Planning Commissioner apparently found a loophole in which to climb into and reverse their decision, admitting that it was the "neighbors" wishes. Callaway lives in Forest Meadows.
