Many today do not even realize that a large part of Yosemite National Park was flooded to create the Hetch Hetchy Dam for San Francisco.
It happened in 1913 and was signed by then President Woodrow Wilson. After that a law was passed that no national park could be used for any special interest group such as the City of San Francisco.
I actually saw an opinion piece by Dan Lungren that said if the Hetch Hetchy was drained, Yosemite would no longer be so crowded, since the Tuolumne River, which feeds into Hetch Hetchy would again become a river of beauty with a valley similar to the Yosemite Valley.
Could this happen? Environmentalists are pushing for it, but the city of San Francisco is pushing back.
