We asked Steve Kearney, candidate for District 5 Supervisor if he had any comment on the actions that took place at the Board of Supervisors meeting on January 14, 2014.
Spellman was totally shamed by the other Supervisors, none of which would even nominate him for Chair, even though he was Vice-Chair and it is usually automatic.
Kearney's statement to us:
"Calaveras County is rich in history and tradition. Historically the Board of Supervisors elects the Chair from the Vice-Chair in most cases.
At the last election the voters elected three new Supervisor, two of which unseated incumbents.
I believe those voters expect their representatives to make tough decisions, even if it breaks with tradition.
Voting to break tradition and elect Supervisor Ponte as the Chair was a tough decision which I am sure none of them took lightly.
The reality is Ponte has the most experience running public meetings irrespective of Supervisor Callaway.
With the challenges facing the county the Board can ill afford to have their focus distracted on best solutions.
Their vote to not repeat history shows me a willingness to put the county's best interest forward and we should all be encouraged by that."
