Per CHP on February 25, 2014 at 7:35 AM a 2011 Ford Ranger pickup driven by Joseph Boehm (40) of Gilroy was traveling southbound on Hwy 49 south of Gun Club Road at approximately 55 MPH.
The driver claims he fell asleep and the Ford drifted onto the right shoulder and collided with a telephone pole and sheered the pole at its base.
The Ford came to rest on its left side on the right shoulder of southbound Hwy 49. The telephone pole was leaning over the southbound lane and the telephone lines were still attached.
One-way traffic control was in effect until the phone company replaced the pole; for approximately 4 hours until both lanes were reopened.
Both Boehm and his passenger Katherine Sherman (34) of Rialto were later arrested on charges not related to this collision.
Driving under the influence was not a factor in this collision.
