Richard C. Hungerford of Murphys passed away at his home in Murphys on March 14, 2014
following a brief illness. He was 92 years of age.
He was born in Lapeer, Michigan in 1921 and was a graduate of Michigan State University with a degree in Chemical Engineering.
Dick spent most of his working life in the field of pharmaceuticals. He worked at Cutter Laboratories during the polio epidemic and later was made VP in charge of Manufacturing and Production at Barnes Hind Pharmaceutical in Sunnyvale.
He enlisted in the US Air Corp in 1942 and after intensive training at Boeing, he was assigned to Aircraft Maintenance as a Second Lt. and was in charge of the B17 training facility in Dalhart Texas.
Dick married Dorothy Sparks. They had three sons; Robert, David and Gregg. David preceded him in death as did Dorothy, his wife of 34 years.
He is survived by his sons Robert and Gregg and his wife of 31 years, Patricia. Dick moved to Murphys in 1978. He was a charter member of the San Joaquin Dixieland Jazz Society in Stockton.
He was a well-known jazz clarinetist, had a band called the Ebbetts Pass Jazz Band in the 80's and lately led the Geezers Jazz Band.
No services will be held at his request. Donations in his name would be welcome at the SJDJS where he donated his talents nearly monthly for 25 years.
