According to CHP on May 24, 2014 at 9:43 AM Robert J. Prater (20) of Stockton was driving his 1989 Toyota truck northbound on Hwy 26 east of Deardorff Road in Glencoe at 50 MPH.
He had a 17-year-old passenger in his right front seat. As Prater entered a gradual downhill left curve in the roadway he claimed that a vehicle traveling towards him was driving in his lane.
He applied the brakes of his vehicle and turned to the right to avoid a collision. Prater's vehicle left the roadway and the front right corner impacted a dirt embankment.
This impact caused the vehicle to overturn, eventually coming to rest on its roof, blocking the eastbound traffic lane.
The 17-year-old passenger of the vehicle was not wearing his seatbelt and was partially ejected from the vehicle. The passenger sustained fatal injuries despite on scene efforts of multiple paramedics and firefighters.
Prater claimed that another vehicle was involved in this collision. He described the vehicle as a dark newer Jeep Cherokee.
Anyone with information concerning this collision is encouraged to contact the San Andreas CHP office at 209-754-3541.
The name of the 17 year old passenger is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
