Fireworks NOT banned in Calaveras County

In a deliberate move that we have not previously seen, the Calaveras County Administrative Office has sent out a press release on fireworks SAFETY.

Although many have begged the County to BAN fireworks, especially during this drought, the county elected officials fear retribution of re-election if they ban the economic benefit to certain organizations in the area.

Putting their elections ahead of public safety, this typical move is an example of our poor representation in Calaveras County.  Angels Camp City Council also was gutless to ban them!

FIREWORKS should be BANNED!! If they cared anything about us, they would have taken action to protect us!!

Ok. Let's look at this story. Where is a copy of the "press release". Or even a link to the site producing this press release.
Next. You say "..Many..". What is "many" who have "begged"?
Next. This "retribution" you speak of? You seem to be quick at the draw pulling funds. Has the Sentinel come up with fundraising alternates to offer these Calaveras County organizations if firework sales are halted? Another bake sale? Spaghetti feed? I don't think so!
Can your interpretation of "retribution" and the board's direction be mistaken for their impression that MOST folks want safe and sane fireworks?
And speaking of safe and sane fireworks, there will be those who will turn to illegal fireworks more so if these S&S ones are prohibited. As you know, the illegal rockets and other airborne displays are what we need to be wary of. And those are outlawed.
Why not work on a ballot measure? Since you're on the soap box, this is the time to act.
Finally, your post should be under "Opinion". Not "News".

Wow! a worried seller of fireworks? all I can say is, folks, don't buy fireworks! they are dangerous and we are in a drought. yes, I think you should find another way, even if it is a little more work on your part, to raise funds. hope my house isn't the one that burns up. such anger, whoa!

They are banned above Murphys. thank god!

Who is this anonymouse who thinks fireworks are "safe and sane". there is really no such thing. Why not let your child play with matches? same thing

You can't protect people from themselves. it's better that we sell the kiddie fireworks and help people be safe with these kiddie fireworks rather than make them illegal and regular people buying "real illegal" fireworks that would cause more damage.

Well, governor Brown could do what Colorado's governor did, and ban private use of fireworks in the state. They can still be enjoyed over lakes and in safe places with professionals handling.

Are you kidding? to the first commenter, one spark from akid with a sparkler can mean a horrible fire in our county. I agree that there is no safe and sane.

Yes, "folks just wanna have fun" and want to burn their leaves and pine needles outdoors all year round. But that is banned, too. I'm one of those who begged our dumb elected officials many times over the years to ban them. Lots of things "folks wanna just have fun " doing, like speeding, are illegal.

We just had two fires in the San Andreas, Angels Camp area. What are these "fireworks" people thinking? Is it just about money?

I can see both sides, but in these drought years, I see no reason to allow fireworks. Maybe we could allow them in the winter, like for Christmas and new years.

To the one who calls them "kiddie" fireworks. HUH? Some 14 year old "kiddie" will save some for later with his friends out in a field.

Sadly, that is soooo tru.

Children will see the bright colored stands and beg and beg and parents; the same ones who buy stuff with sugar advertised on tv, will feel they MUST give their children what they want, whether its good for anyone or not.

OMG! What a bunch of cry babies! I'm the issuer of the first letter!
I'm not involved with ANY of these organizations who use fireworks as a fundraiser. Nice try. Typical of assumptions made around here.
Let's look at what we have so far.
1) Work a little harder? Wow. Why didn't I think of that? Thanks for the support!
2) Safe & Sane. Yes. Put your kid in a bubble at birth and release him to the world at 18yo. He'll learn about life and not to burn his fingers from a stranger. I mean, aren't you a parent?
3) Yes. It is about the money going to local organizations. Rather than stocking up on illegal air borne fireworks. Families can have a very safe choice. And support their community.
So in a nutshell. Ya'll don't want fireworks at all. With that in mind, my Chicken Littles...
Shall we discontinue outdoor bbq's (might drop a hot coal!)
Discontinue burn days (an ember may catch!) Outlaw campfires in designated areas (Kidde's may fall in a pit!).
Finally my FAVORITE comment was ...drum roll!..
Fireworks for Christmas and New Years! This coming from someone who hangs all those lights on that dead, dry, brittle Christmas tree you put IN YOUR LIVING ROOM for 1 month!

You issued a press release from the County? I'm confused, drum roll. Your anger toward anyone who wants to prevent fires in this drought, towards anyone who doesn't want a RIM FIRE in our county, is staggering, actually scary. By teaching your children to love fireworks, you are teaching them to grow up setting off bigger and bigger explosions. Get a clue, drum roll.

Look you guys. The fact is, that in this climate, no one should be using fireworks. Don't buy them. Don't let your kids buy them. They are NOT safe and sane. I understand the comment about wintertime, when its wet, it would be ok.

God help us all. The only intelligent comments on here are from the safe & sane person. You nanny State people want the Goverment to control your lives from cradle to grave.

It isn't your god or my god who starts fires. its idiots who build campfires, throw cigarettes and play with "safe and sane" fireworks. my but you are so upset!

Just read about the fire in Mountain Ranch. Seems it was caused by children playing with fire. Now the public knows why fireworks are bad news.
