At the last Calaveras Supervisors meeting, November 25, 2014, the subject of FEMA and required flood insurance was discussed.
District 5 Supervisor (Spellman) was again absent from the meeting, although he is still collecting the full pay for the job.
It does not appear likely that the Board will rescind our being part of FEMA, even though nearly every other county rejected them.
Although several members of the public spoke on this issue, David Tunno of Valley Springs seems to be the one who has studied and understands the failures of FEMA in Calaveras County. He calls FEMA a scam.
FEMA admits that their mapping was not accurate, but refuses to revise the maps, causing many property owners to be subjected to loss of value and difficulty in selling due to these inaccuracies.
We only hear from people who don't want FEMA in the county. It is possible to rescind being a part of FEMA, however, apparently there are some who live in areas like the Cosgrove Creek area in Valley Springs, who are grateful for FEMA insurance.
