CHP: "Alcohol factor in Coulterville collision"

According to CHP on April 14, 2015 James E. Atkins (29) of Moccasin was driving his 2004 Dodge Dakota pickup on Hwy 120 westbound at a speed unsafe for roadway conditions.

As his pickup exited a curvature in the roadway, near Priest Grade, Mr. Atkins lost control, crossing into the eastbound lane.

As Mr. Atkins turned back to the right, he simultaneously locked up the brakes, skidding across the westbound lane and leaving the road.

The pickup ultimately impacted a dirt hillside, resulting in instantaneous deceleration.  Although Mr. Atkins was wearing his seatbelt and the airbags deployed, he still sustained serious internal injuries.

After the crash, Mr. Atkins left the scene on foot.  He was picked up by a passing motorist and taken to his residence in Moccasin.

Mr. Atkins called for medical assistance from his residence. Alcohol appears to be the primary factor in the collision and Mr. Atkins was arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated.

The Dodge Dakota pickup sustaines major front end damage and frame bowing and was a total loss.
