Hwy 12 Chain reaction traffic collision

   According to CHP on June 23, 2015 around 10:25 AM Dominic Degen (53) of Vallecito was driving a 1993 Chevrolet for Angels Sheet Metal on Hwy 12 eastbound nearing a construction zone.

   Debra Beaufort (70) of Mokelumne Hill
was stopped in a 2001 Toyota at the construction zone on Hwy 12 near Central Hill Road.

   Barry Lovett (71) of Valley Springs was stopped was stopped in a 2015 Honda at the construction zone on Hwy 12.

   James Grundy (64) of Valley Springs was also stopped at the construction zone on Hwy 12 in a 2010 Jeep on Hwy 12.

    Mr. Degen was approaching the rear of stopped traffic at a speed of about 55 MPH, and was inattentive to his driving, reaching for his lunchbox.

   Degan applied his brakes and left 60' of locked wheel skid prior to striking the rear of Ms. Beaufort's Honda.

   The force of this collision pushed the Honda forward, causing it to strike the rear of Mr. Lovett's Toyota, which was also pushed forward and into the rear of Mr. Grundy's Jeep.

   Ms. Beaufort was transported to Mark Twain Hospital with moderate injuries.  Raquel Lucero (20)  of Valley Springs, a passenger in Mr. Lovett's Toyota was transported to Sutter Amador Hospital with moderate injuries. Sherry Grundy (61) a passenger in Mr. Grundy's Jeep was transported to Mark Twain Hospital with moderate injuries.

   Mr. Grundy and Mr. Lovett refused transport for their minor injuries. Mr. Degen was not injured in the crash.  Alcohol and/or drugs were not a factor in the collision per CHP.
