During the debacle that should have been the Office of Emergency Services taking care of all the problems during the Butte Fire, several people remember a man named Clay Hawkins, who was at one time head of the Office of Emergency Services in Calaveras County.
They remember that he headed up other major fires in the county years ago. We do believe he retired, but aren't positive.
Anyway, in his place, the CAO apparently appointed Supervisor Edson for the Butte Fire, who laughed and then two days later started crying and dumped it on the Sheriff's Office.
No just anyone can handle the type of stress in a fire of this magnitude and our Sheriff Kuntz is another one of these; not just Edson.
One ill sent or misguided press release after another; errors in judgment, failure to enter and map the fire area sooner and on and on and on.
And so Calaveras County, and as a result, residents who were forcibly evacuated and many burnt out, are suffering. They can't even centralize one location or phone number for these poor people.
And now they are telling them they need to COME TO THEM for help; that if they want help, they must go to the government center in San Andreas.
Why can't these people, who really haven't much to do, GO TO THE RESIDENTS who need them? Why can't they go to the shelters, the campgrounds, etc. and take them the help they need?
