According to the Calaveras Sheriff's department on April 19, 2016 around 10:30 AM inmate Gray Bond Gracy (28) of Hayward, exited??? his assigned jail cell located on the top tier, jumped over the security rail and landed on the bottom tier.
Correctional officers arrived immediately to offer assistance??, but Gracy began to physically resist them.
Correctional staff attempted to calm??? Gracy until an ambulance and fire crews arrived to provide medical aid.
Inmate Gracy became more resistant and combative upon their arrival. Fortunately, the jail was conducting training at the time and had additional staff.
A total of 7 correctional officers tried to restrain inmate Gracy while EMS assessed him and correctional staff was able to restrain Gracy and load him onto a gurney for transport.
Three correctional officers sustained injuries as a result, consisting of multiple scratches and an undisclosed?? hand injury.
The officers were treated for their injuries and released. Inmate Gracy was transported to Mark Twain Hospital for treatment and treated for his injuries and released back to the county jail.
According to the Calaveras Sheriff's Office inmate Gracy, who was being held at the Calaveras County Jail as the result of a disturbance call on April 10, 2016 in the 8500 block of Owens Way in Valley Springs.
Per their press release, Gracy was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, a felon in possession of ammunition and a parole violation.
Gracy had apparently assaulted a correctional officer on April 17, 2016 by attempting to push him down a flight of stairs. The officer was not injured.
Additional charges are being filed against Gracy with the District Attorney's office.
