Doug Martin, a long-time resident of Calaveras County, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday May 21, 2016. Born January 8, 1937, he was 79.
His long battle with
cancer may have taken his body, but his spirit was there throughout and will remain with us long after his passing.
He will be missed by his loving wife of 59 years, Nadine, daughter Donna (Del) Whitaker of Davis, grandson Sam Wahyou of Phoenix and granddaughter Delaney
Whitaker of Davis.
Doug will also be missed by sisters Jill Baratta of Sutter Creek, Norah (Mike) Falvey of Mountain Ranch, Julie (Bob) Tudor of Kalispell, Montana and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his young son, Roy and brothers Jim and Larry.
He will also be missed by countless others who were fortunate enough to have known him.
Doug loved life. As he and Nadine traveled in their RV they had many experiences, along with acquiring a new realm of friends.
He was always ready to drop everything to be with his daughter and family, whether it was barbecuing, working on projects or enjoying his grandchildren.
There are three words that define much of Doug's life, "Hair", "Horseshoes," and "Helpful". Doug's Hair Hut was a local institution, whether you came in for a cut, a shave or conversation.
As a barber he literally gave cuts to generations of grandfathers, sons and grandsons.
Next to his wife, pitching horseshoes was his passion. for over thirty years Doug was always up for a challenge at the game whether at a family barbecue, a dinner with friends, behind the barber shop or at a National level where he placed 7th in his division.
He was always ready and willing to help anyone, wherever he knew them or not. He used his self-taught skills in every walk of life.
Contributions in Doug's memory can be made to CHS Scholarship Fund, c/o Teri Tanner, PO Box 607, San Andreas 95249 or VFW Post 2600, PW Box 986, San Andreas 95249.
Please join the family and friends for a celebration of life, scheduled for Friday, June 17, 2016 at 6 PM at the VFW, 156 E. St. Charles Street in San Andreas.
