CHP has released more details of the fatal collision we reported on May 16, 2017 which occurred at approximately 1:50 PM.
According to CHP, Dale Gundy (57) of Glencoe was driving a 2003 Mercedes eastbound on Hwy 26, west of Stormy Lane.
Carlos Medina (32) of Shingle Springs was driving a 2014 Dodge westbound on Hwy 26 approaching the Mercedes.
Gundy apparently allowed his vehicle to travel completely into the westbound lane, directly into the path of the Dodge and the two collided head-on.
Gundy was extricated from the Mercedes and both occupants of the Dodge were able to exit prior to both vehicles catching fire. A large area of grass caught fire as a result.
Gundy was pronounced dead at the scene. Several fire trucks responded and they were able to extinguish the fire quickly The deceased was turned over to the Calaveras County Coroner's office.
