Fatal Motorcycle Collision in Bear Valley

On June 20, 2018 around 1:15 PM Brian Montgomery (48) of Dorrington was driving a 2001 Toyota 4 Runner on Hwy 4
westbound, east of Bear Valley Road.

Geoffrey Ramsay (65) of Stayton, Oregon was riding his 2016 Indian Roadmaster motorcycle and pulling a motorcycle trailer eastbound on Hwy 4, approaching Montgomery's vehicle.

Per the CHP report, due to his level of intoxication, Montgomery allowed his vehicle to drift into the eastbound lane, directly into the path of the motorcycle.

Montgomery's vehicle collided head-on with the motorcycle and Ramsay was ejected, sustaining fatal injuries as a result of the collision.

Montgomery's vehicle overturned and came to rest blocking the roadway.  He was arrested at the scene, according to CHP, for 191.5(b) PC - Vehicular  Manslaughter While Intoxicated, 23153(a) VC - Felony DUI Causing Injury and 23153(b) VC - Felony DUI Causing Injury with Blood Alcohol Concentration above .08%.

Due to the extent of his injuries, he was initially transported by air ambulance to Sutter Roseville Medical Center for treatment. He was later admitted to Marshall Medical Center for further treatment.

The CHP in San Andreas is working with the Alpine County District Attorney's Office to identify additional criminal charges that may be filed at a later date.

Per CHP alcohol was a primary factor in this collision. This collision is still under investigation. Anyone that witnessed the collision or may have come into contact with Mr. Montgomery or Mr. Ramsay on Wednesday near Bear Valley or Lake Alpine is encouraged to contact the CHP office at 754-3541.
