Per CHP, on March 26, 2023 around 4:10 PM Savannah Cooper (18) of Angels Camp was driving a 2006 Ford F-150 pickup on
Hwy 49 at an unknown speed with another minor 17 year old passenger.Russell Webster of Sonora was driving a Ford Escape in the other direction on Hwy 49 with passengers Rachel Webster and three monor children, all of Sonora.
Cooper apparently drove her vehicle onto the dirt shoulder and then lost control, then crossed the lane and directly into the Websters vehicle, which then overturned off of the roadway.
Savannah Cooper received moderate injuries and was transported to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. Her passenger received major injuries and was also transported to Doctors Hospital .
Russell Webster was transported to UC Davis with major injuries. Rachel Webster was transported to Modesto Memorial with major injuries. A 13 year old minor male received major injuries and was transported to UC Davis. The other 13 year old, a female, was transported to Mark Twain Hospital and did not survive. The 11 year old male was transported to UC Davis with major injuries.
Cooper was determined to be driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision, according to CHP, and was arrested. The collision is still under investigation.
